Analysis of failure mechanisms of adhesive joints modified by a novel additive manufacturing-assisted method

The research presented in this paper used an innovative method to modify the configuration of adhesively bonded joints for improved mechanical performance. Additive manufacturing was employed produce sacrificial support structures with a water-soluble filament (Polyvinyl Alcohol). design freedom offered by additive makes it easy tailor fixtures any geometry, which can be accurately make desired fillet shape at end adhesive bond line. In addition experimental tests, finite element (FEM) study stress distribution along line four different modified joints, whilst discrete (DEM) estimate joint failure load and crack path due its strength describing initiation progression micro-cracks. results show that novel accurate line, regardless type. performance features increased significantly. Furthermore, obtained from DEM model is close agreement (FE) results. Hence, mechanism hybrid then summarised.
